ARTHURIAN LEAGUE 2-2 (4-2) vs SOUTHERN AMATEUR LEAGUE
21 MAR ● ARGONAUT TROPHY Match report (from Peter Brooking)After several years out the Arthurian League representative team lined up in the oversized green black and white kit with our opponents the Southern Amateur League in all red.
The SAL had already played multiple games together and it showed in the first half with some good passages of play and good shape. They looked like a well drilled machine and the Arthurian boys knew they’d be up against a serious opposition. Two early corners almost proved fruitful for the Arthurian boys with both centre-backs Matt Rutherford (Chigwell) and captain Artem Aliev (Repton) coming close and nearly getting the early breakthrough. SAL scored from a corner that was controversially called as over the line although I’m sure the VAR studio would have had something to say about it. Josh Riley (Repton) had the pick of the half chances in the first half with a good run through that narrowly missed the near post. The lads went in at 1-0 at the break with having not quite tested the keeper nor the defence. Gaffer Billy Jenkins (Forest) and Coach Nicky Samra (Repton) made some changes to freshen the side in the second half. After a bright start where the SAL came out sluggish we conceded a penalty just before the 65th minute. A failed panenka penalty which managed to find its way over the crossbar meant it stayed 1-0. Although not for long as we conceded from a corner shortly after from their centre-back, Kofi Gay (Actonians), who rose above to head in the bottom corner. At 2-0 it was time to freshen the team up again. A superb double save from Oliver Bowles (Brentwood) who kept us in the game multiple times throughout the evening. A flurry of chances begun to unfold with the Arthurian lads coming close multiple times. Fullback Peter Brooking (Brentwood) had a lengthy run through to Alfie Calderwood (Brentwood) who pass-rolled into the path of Craig Bonnar (Johnians) who hit a lovely shot in off the post. The comeback was well and truly on. The Arthurian team could sense blood and threw the kitchen sink at SAL who couldn’t sustain the speed and decisiveness in the attack. Ollie Light (Cholms) who’d put in a shift all day was rewarded with a flappy failed save from the keeper which rolled into the net. 2-2 full time, penalties inbound 🚀 With Oliver Bowles (Brentwood) in the sticks there was a sense of confidence that we could make the comeback complete.
The result means it's all to play for in the final game with the Arthurian League in the driving seat. A win in regulation time or on penalties will land us the trophy for the second time; a win in regulation time for the AFC would hand them the trophy; a shoot-out win would leave all three teams level on points and goal-difference so it would come down to goals-scored, as follows: - if the score is 0-0 or 1-1 the SAL would be champs; - if the score is 2-2 then it's a three-way share; - a draw of 3 goals each or higher would result in a share between the Arthurian League and the AFC. The trophy is in sight and the Arthurian boys are on the rise 🚀 The Squad
